The complexities of PETER GRIMES Interlude II

Philip Reed's evaluation of the expansion of the storm interlude:

SOURCE:  cropped scan of p. 102 from The Making of Peter Grimes  II:  Notes and Commentaries; this is from Philip Reed's essay "Finding the Right Notes," (pp. 79-115).

Here is a comparison of one of the more straightforward bits in both the published vocal score and in the composition draft.  This is part of f. 31r:
SOURCE:  marked-up composite of vocal score p. 110 and composition score f. 31r.

Now here are scans of ff. 36r and 35r from the facsimile of the compositional draft, just to illustrate something of the complexities Reed describes.  For those interested, you really must read his essay with the facsimile and published score at hand.  But the vocal score will do just fine.
